Graveside memorial services and burial of cremains was Sunday, May 30, at Park Grove Cemetery, St. Clair County. Cremation rites were accorded. Graveside services and burial of cremains next to his wife, Bertha Beatrice, will be held at a later date at Elmhurst Cemetery, Guymon, Texas County, Okla. Arrangements were under the direction of Montgomery-Viets Funeral Home of Buffalo. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. Eugene Clyde “E.C./Gene” Hobson, 87, Urbana, formerly of Guymon, Okla., was born Dec. 9, 1922, in Leon, Love County, Okla., the eighth of nine children born to the Rev. Myrtle Preston and Edyth Ellen (Johnson) Hobson. He died May 25, 2010, at Citizens Memorial Healthcare, Bolivar. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy from Sept. 25, 1942, to Sept. 19, 1949, as a qualified aviation machinist mate of a PB4Y1-Liberator (B24) aircraft. He married Bertha Beatrice Edwards on Aug. 1, 1950, in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas. They lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, North Long Beach, Calif., Tishomingo, Okla., and Sulphur, Okla., before moving to Guymon, Okla., in December 1953. He worked as a mechanic for Perkins Petroleum and Phillips 66, as a car salesman for Texas County Motors/Hinchey Ford, and a salesman for Longbotham Wholesale, Inc., before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans, as well as the United Methodist Church. He married Billie Steuart Jones Tibbetts July 4, 1992, in Beaver, Beaver County, Okla., after her first husband, Gerald Tibbetts died. They moved to Urbana in Hickory County by Pomme de Terre Lake in November 1992, to enjoy their retirement. The joy of his life was their little dog, Chocolate. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bertha; eight brothers and sisters: Lettie Etta Hobson Bond, infant Lena Louise Hobson, Wesley Herschel Hobson, infant Neoma Jane Hobson, Ila Odell Hobson Knight Thompson, Buford Ancel Hobson, Samuel Andrew Hobson, and infant Joseph Preston Hobson; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one step-grandson. Survivors include his wife, Billie, of the home; three daughters: Rebecca “Beckey” Jean and husband, Pastor Gary R. Wolfe, Carlsbad, N.M., Myrtle “Myrt” Ann and husband, Gordon Smith, Springfield, Tenn., and Edyth “Edie” Hope and husband, Steve Walsh, Wichita, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; eight stepchildren: Lorrie Ann and husband, Jud Ray Kygar, Dumas, Texas, Valarie Lynn and husband, Angel Ramirez Franco, Minneola, Kan., Russel Gerald and wife, Mary Magadaline Tibbetts, Beaver, Okla., DeWayne Lee and wife, Karen Tibbetts, Tyrone, Okla., Micky Darnell and husband, Robert Brown Jr., Sapulpa, Okla., Leslie Vale Tibbetts, Wichita, Kan., Audie Alfred Tibbetts, Liberal, Kan., and Heather Dawn and husband, Murray Sager Garnett, Ardmore, Okla.; 20 step-grandchildren; and 26 step-great-grandchildren.
