Wilma Marie Carter

Wilma Marie (Dorman) Carter was born on August 22, 1942, in Buffalo, Missouri. "Marie" was born and raised on the family dairy farm north of Buffalo. Marie was the firstborn child of the union of Wilma Josephine "Duff" Dorman and Oliver Bertram Dorman. Marie grew up on the farm with her sisters, Sharon and Jeanie, and was a graduate of Tunas High in 1960. Marie was wed to Ronald Dean Carter shortly thereafter and began building a family which would turn out to be her legacy of this life. To this household were born three children: Lisa, Jimmy, and Dale Carter. Marie held many titles and various jobs over the years that all revolved around helping others. Christian, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Social Worker...whatever the job, her focus was clear: this life wasn’t about herself. She served The Lord first, and was a stalwart at Olive Point Baptist Church. She prayed fervently for her family to be saved and to bring others to God. This was at the forefront of a life that was lived to the fullest. As strong as she was as a Christian she kept pace as the matriarch of our family. She kept tabs on everyone as her three children married and began raising families of their own. Over the next 15 years, ten grandchildren were born. She loved competition, and although she claimed to be innocent, she routinely dealt each and every one of her family members a handy butt whooping at Jenga, Rummikub, or the latest dollar store game find. She chased the grandchildren all over and did her best to see as many ball games as she could. When you walked in the house, she asked if you wanted a sandwich and then she asked again and again and again. She did her best to make sure her family never missed a holiday together. There was no greater joy to her than a house full of her progeny laughing, carrying on, and running amuck. Marie thrived in these situations, and you had better not dare razz her that she couldn’t handle the madness. She would hit you with a quick smart-aleck remark and sly grin. Retirement was no time to relax. Marie filled her life with hobbies and activities and perfected her skills at quilting, sewing, and cake decorating. She loved traveling to watch her grandchildren and great grandchildren play sports and any other activities in which they engaged. She loved helping with the church youth group and being the "go-to" when a grandchild or great grandchild needed a "certain" quilt made, an item hemmed or mended, a "special" cake baked, or doll clothes sewn...if she could, she would. As her family grew and three turned into six, six to ten, and ten to some infinite number, she remained the glue that held it all together. That little house on D highway continued to fill up and her smile continued to grow. She spent her life smiling right up until her time of passing on May 3rd, 2023. As we sit here today, together again, I can guarantee she is smiling from ear to ear as she watches her legacy, her reason for life, gather again. As we depart today don’t be surprised to hear her soft voice whisper “hurry back”. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sharon; and her beloved son, Jimmy. She leaves behind her daughter, Lisa; son Dale & wife Rachel; daughter-in-law, Kim Carter; sister, Cheryl "Jeanie" Wood; ten grandchildren and their spouses; and eleven great-grandchildren. Marie was expectant and excited knowing that she had six more great grandbabies on the way this year. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in the Cantlon-Otterness & Viets Funeral Home in Urbana with Pastor Terry Gentry, Jr. officiating. Escorts will be Nick Henderson, Jordan Henderson, Stiel Carter, Stone Carter, Bryndon Carter, Andy Campbell, Mason Potter, Shawn Bryan, and Branden Smith. Interment will be in the Hopewell Cemetery under the care and direction of the Cantlon-Otterness & Viets Funeral Home of Urbana. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Olive Point Kids Ministry.
